Why We Can Sing of Light Despite the Darkness

"Sing We Now of Christmas!" It is Christmas time. A time of goodwill for all men and women, where we decorate trees, sing carols, exchange gifts, and celebrate true Christmas cheer. Tis the season to be jolly; but, unfortunately, that is not always the case. The holiday season can also feel burdensome. Whether it’s the chaotic traveling, tiresome holiday shopping, or simply feeling alone during a lonely holiday dinner, for some, the holidays are not always full of cheer. We live in a time where greed, selfishness, bitterness, and stress have become ominous mistletoes that hang over our heads, stealing our joy during this season.
Tis the season to be jolly, but what happens if that same season brings painful memories or overwhelming stress? What happens when it is not just a season, but your life? What do you do when the sickness doesn’t get healed, the marriage doesn’t get better, or the pain of losing a loved one never seems to go away?
Well, the good news is that we sing now of Christmas because we sing now of something greater. We sing now of restoration, where the brokenness, the flaws, the mistakes, are all made new and perfect, and the former things are forgotten. We sing now of forgiveness, where your past transgressions melt away like snow on a Spring morning. We sing now of faith, where pain always has an end and love always has a beginning. We sing now of praise, where the tests of your life become testimonies and even your biggest mess becomes your biggest message. We sing now of giving, where it is better to give than to receive, because your heart always receives something when you give.
We sing now of love, where tears are wiped away, a hug can change a heart, and hate can no longer kill, steal, or destroy. We sing now of Jesus, the Son of Man, the Sacrificial Lamb, the King of all Kings, and the Lord of Lords. The reason why we can love one another. The reason why you can outlast struggles and overcome pain. The reason why anxiety can be cast away to a cross, finding rest on the greenest of pastures. The reason we smile. The reason we laugh. The reason we hope. Jesus is the reason for the season, and regardless of all our problems, we can still experience joy. We can still sing light despite all the darkness. That is what it truly means to Sing We Now of Christmas!
