Counselors

Below you will find introductions for each of our counselors and intake specialists. Our receptionists will be happy to help connect you with the counselor that is the best fit for you. You can learn more about them and request a particular therapist when you schedule your appointment.

We offer free counseling services to students, faculty, and staff with our Practicum/Intern Student Counselors-in-training, and LPC-Associates. Counseling services by fully licensed professional counselors are offered at a nominal fee of $30.00 per session.

Elizabeth (Guanghua) Shi

Guanghua (Elizabeth) Shi, MS, LPC

The self-doubt and insecurity you feel inside make it difficult to interact with the world around you. Elizabeth Shi is a Licensed Professional Counselor that has experience in helping clients from diverse cultural backgrounds. She values each of her clients and strives to provide a safe and non-judgmental place for her clients to share their concerns and explore their world. Elizabeth seeks to establish a strong connection with her clients and helps them to experience healing through encountering their emotional needs and strengthening their inner selves.

The struggle to feel important has become more difficult by the thoughts that are replayed in your head. Frank Cheek is a Licensed Professional Counselor that has experience helping clients understand how their thoughts often impact their choices and behaviors. He provides individual, marriage and couples therapy sessions for a nominal fee. Frank helps his clients learn more about themselves and their actions by challenging unhealthy thoughts and behaviors to help them identify and resolve emotional concerns.

You have experienced some painful events in life and need to talk with someone who will hear you and can help to make sense of it all. Victoria Whitaker is a Licensed Professional Counselor that has experience in helping clients find their voice through sharing their stories. Anna Lee

Life is hard, and you sometimes feel out of control. Anna Lee is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate that has experience in helping clients from various backgrounds, most frequently those dealing with addiction, family, depression, pre-marital, and grief. She has a passion for helping clients pursue their mental health needs. In the counseling room, Anna uses the Gestalt and Solution-Focused therapy approaches, a combination of emotionally expressive activities and resources set toward customized goals. On the weekends, Anna spends time with family, taking walks, and having good meals with fun conversations.

April Aspgren

April Aspgren, MA, ThM, LPC-Associate

Sometimes your life feels out of control. You’ve tried to find ways to cope with it all and need some help. April Aspgren is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate that has experience in helping clients from all stages of life with grief from unresolved losses, processing trauma from unresolved physical, verbal, emotional, or sexual abuse, adopting positive coping skills to replace negative coping or numbing skills (substance abuse and other forms of addiction), and managing anxiety, depression, bipolar, autism, and neurocognitive decline (dementia, Alzheimer’s). April practices cognitive behavioral therapy and is trained in EMDR. She helps people notice and take captive their thoughts, which may result in changed feelings and behavior. She will also integrate faith and spiritual disciplines for clients seeking a holistic approach.

Huy Lam

Duc (Huy) Lam, MA, LPC-Associate

The fear and uncertainty you experience make navigating relationships challenging. Huy Lam is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate that has experience in helping individuals, couples, and families. He is fluent in both English and Vietnamese and an avid advocate for mental health in the Vietnamese community. He believes the therapeutic relationship is the key to change, and he wants to understand his client's wants, needs, fears, and dreams to help guide his clients by providing strategic skills and insights when necessary, even with religious and spiritual issues.

Miranda Jones

When difficult and unimaginable things happen, you want to speak with someone who understands. Miranda Jones is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate and welcomes individuals from all walks of life who are struggling with loss, anxiety, depression, past trauma, relationship issues, shame, and self-worth issues in her counseling room. In her counseling sessions, she strives to create a warm, judgment-free environment so that the individual feels known, heard, and supported. Miranda counsels from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach and seeks to explore the whole person in their mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual health. She hopes to explore her passions in working with sexual assault victims and foster care and adopted children. Miranda has seen how God uses counseling to provide healing and restoration to the brokenhearted and desires to be a part of His work.

Sydney Taylor

Sydney Taylor is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate and loves working with young adults to help them flourish as they navigate the various challenges of early adulthood, such as life transitions, depression, anxiety, lack of self-acceptance, social and relationship stress, bullying, performance domain issues, and eating disorders.

Sydney has specialized training in Sport Psychology and is passionate about working with those who experience the various challenges that come with performing in different domains. These domains include sports, performing arts, high-risk occupations, and businesses and corporations. Specific issues with motivation and commitment, self-confidence, performance anxiety, emotion regulation, and energy/stress management are areas that can be explored and addressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Practicum and Intern Students?
Practicum and Intern Students are graduate students in the final semesters of their master's level program (MAPC and MAP) at DBU who are working towards completing 40 clinical hours for course credit. These students are supervised by a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor and/or a Licensed Psychologist in Texas.
What is an LPC-Associate?
An LPC-Associate is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate who is provisionally licensed to practice counseling only under a supervisor who is approved by the state of Texas. These counselors have passed their state board examinations for licensure and are working towards completing 3,000 hours of supervised counseling to apply for full licensure with Texas.
What is an LPC or LMFT?
A Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) are fully licensed by their respective governing boards in Texas and can practice freely without supervision. Sessions with these therapists are charged a nominal fee.
